Our member, the Central Election Commission of Latvia celebrated Global Elections Day with two events.
On 4th February 2015 it held a meeting with the Riga City Election Commission’s Head and election districts’ coordinators to discuss the polling stations accessibility to disabled persons in the Riga City. At the present time about 35 percent of the Riga’s polling stations are accessible for persons of reduced mobility. The meeting participants shared their views about the possible ways to improve the situation.
On 5 February 2015 the Public Law Institute (PLI) organised the public discussion ‘Expression of the will of the electors in ballots’. The event was opened by the speech of Mr. Arvids Dravnieks, Executive Director of the PLI, on the history of the ballots and different options of the elector’ will expression in Latvia. Mr. Arnis Cimdars, the Chairman and Mr. Ritvars Eglajs, the Secretary of the Central Election Commission of Latvia contributed to the discussion on the subject of Latvia’s ballots design and ballots counting system. Other speakers presented their views on the ballots in Estonia and Finland, mathematics methods in vote counting, the specific features of the voting system and ballots in the Central Asia. In conclusion, participants of the discussion exchanged their views on the further development of ballots in Latvia.
