‘They vote for the first time, but not the last – Trends, challenges, and best practices of youth participation’

Online Symposium, 4 February 2021

The Association decided to focus on youth participation throughout the year 2021. As the first step in our journey, the ACEEEO organized an Online Symposium titled ‘They vote for the first time, but not the last – Trends, challenges, and best practices of youth participation’ on 4 February 2021.

The Symposium dealt with the topic from an international comparative angle as well as from a country specific perspective, tackling the experiences of international organizations, members of the academia, and Electoral Management Bodies. We are glad that a fruitful discussion has been taken place with the active participation of more than 50 electoral experts from all around the world.

A short report as well as presentations are available at the following link: https://aceeeo.org/en/events/online-symposium-youth-participation

The ACEEEO is planning to hold several similar gatherings as well as dedicating the Annual Conference to this topic. Moreover, the draft concept is being revised and finalized with regard to the insights of the Symposium, and the project will be launched with the participation of the ACEEEO community.

Celebrating the Global Elections Day (GED)

4 February 2021

The EMBs of the ACEEEO commemorated the GED for the 16th time on 4 February 2021.

On the occasion of the Global Elections Day, the Central Election Commission of Albania and the OSCE Presence in Albania organized a series of activities with focus on first time voters to increase their participation in elections. The Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina published a press release on the occasion of promoting the initiative to mark the first Thursday in February as the Global Election Day. Central Election Commission of Bulgaria celebrated the holiday by organizing an online meeting with students from the University of National and World Economy. The initiative is the first step of the CEC information campaign on how citizens can exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections for MPs, which will be held in the Republic of Bulgaria on April 4, 2021. Central Election Commission of the Kyrgyz Republic hosted an Open Day. Throughout the day, the CEC hosts various events dedicated to raising public awareness, especially among young people, about the electoral system of the Kyrgyz Republic. As part of celebration of #GlobalElectionsDay conducted on the initiative and with coordination of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan in all regions of the country a Republican action was held with an open lecture on the topic - "Development of electoral system of the Republic of Kazakhstan."

As mentioned above, the ACEEEO Secretariat celebrated GED by organizing an online symposium on youth participation.

Executive Board meeting

25 March 2021

The ACEEEO Executive Board represented by the seven elected Members (Bulgaria, Croatia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Republic of Moldova, and Romania) and the President-in-office - the CEC of Georgia - has met for the first time this year on 25 March, online.

The Executive Board discussed the resent activities of the ACEEEO, including the lessons learnt from the Online Symposiums on COVID-19 organized by the throughout the last year and adopted the 2020 annual report including the financial report. Furthermore, the Executive Board noted the organization’s planned activities to celebrate the ACEEEO’s 30th Anniversary as presented by the Secretary General and decided upon the time and the venue of the 30th Anniversary Annual Conference and General Assembly of the ACEEEO.

Finally, one more important change happened during the meeting. Tamar Zhvania on behalf of the Central Election Commission of Georgia handed over the rotating ACEEEO Presidency to the Permanent Electoral Authority of Romania, represented by Zsombor Vajda. While the symbol of the Presidency - the ACEEEO bird - was handed over symbolicaly and currently residing at the library of CEC Georgia, we hope that it could physically change its location in September this year in Romania, where the community will be able to meet personally in the greatest number possible.
