16th ACEEEO Annual Conference in Strasbourg, France

Printer Friendly and PDF
Date of the event:
Tuesday, September 18, 2007 to Wednesday, September 19, 2007

The annual conference of the ACEEEO in 2007 was a significant event in the life of the ACEEEO due to the following reasons.

Firstly this was the first time that our conference was organized under our new name, Association of European Election Officials. Therefore, we considered this conference as a unique event, where we had a chance to express our being a Pan-European association and celebrated it together with our colleagues from all over the world.

Secondly, this was the first time when we organized our annual conference in Strasbourg (France), where the seat of the Council of Europe is and in co-operation with the Venice Commission. Right after the ACEEEO conference, the Venice Commission organised the 4th Conference of the Electoral Management Bodies.

Concerning the preparation and conduction of elections, the role of electoral education became increasingly important. Electoral education is a case at issue in every continent and centers, in the form of state and local governmental organizations or NGOs, are gradually established that continue this activity as an institutional service. The members of each new generation should be convinced of the democratic values, different election elements and social importance of voting. Therefore electoral education is a never ending course, as new generations have to be informed on the election process again and again.

Of course, historical traditions, political cultures and election systems of the different countries are diverse and therefore the adaptation to national traditions is necessary in each country. However, democracy is a common value of mankind, thus common elements are to be found in its education. In the course of this conference the ACEEEO made an attempt to set forth these common values and to launch an international cooperation in the field of education.
